Most known for being part of the Virginia Cavaliers side that won the 2019 NCAA Championship, two-way rookie Kyle Guy has been carving a name for himself in the NBA G League this season.
He knocked down 24-points in his final college game, and has taken that scoring to the professional ranks. For the Stockton Kings, Guy is averaging 21.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, 4.8 assists, and 1.1 steals, on the season.
From range, he’s lights-out, converting at a 40% clip. Back in December, he scored 42 points against the Iowa Wolves, on 8-16 shooting from beyond the arc. This is tied with Marial Shayok, of the Delaware Blue Coats, for the most points by an individual this season.
In addition, he recorded seven 3-pointers in a 37-point outburst against the Oklahoma City Blue in January. Guy is certainly a dangerous outside threat, holding the 7th spot for the best 3-point percentage in the league.
In terms of total 3-point shots made, he’s in top spot with 142.
Player Profile:
The 22-year-old guard is the definition of a modern NBA player. A large bulk of his work is done from 3-point land (8.9 attempts per game), from catch-and-shoot scenarios. He possesses smooth shooting mechanics, with a quick release, that’s easy on the eye. Klay Thompson and Kyle Korver-esque.
From time-to-time, he can mix it up and roll to the rim. Despite standing at 6-foot-1, his speed and agility allows him to convert in the paint or dish out the assist. Additionally, he can handle the ball and produce.
Guy had a rough start to the season, shooting below 40% in the first two months of the season. However, that appeared to be him adjusting to the professional game. His 12.7 3-point attempts in November reduced to 8.4 through the months of January and March. With his shooting efficiency rising.
Before the season suspension, Guy was averaging 29.8 points in the month of March (4 games). Along with 3.8 rebounds, and an incredible 9 assists per game. Whilst converting at a 48.2% rate from the field, 45.7% from 3. His efforts helped push the Stockton Kings to a 23-14 record on the season.
Being selected with the 55th pick in the 2019 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings, Guy signed a two-way contract. This would allow him to develop his craft primarily in the G League. He has featured in 2 NBA games, averaging 1 point in 2 minutes per game.
Unfortunately for Guy, the Kings are stacked in his position. With De’Aaron Fox, Buddy Hield, Bogdan Bogdanovic, and Yogi Ferrell all taking guard minutes. Even Kent Bazemore can slide to the 2 also.
However, Luke Walton and Vlade Divac must be keeping an eye on his G League exploits. Kyle Guy certainly deserves a legitimate NBA opportunity. He’ll most likely impress.
